Our community wants to continue the level of excellence it has always demanded and provided for Jewish seniors. But our building is outdated. A totally refurbished facility that takes current and future needs of short-term and extended-care Residents into consideration will be an important asset to our community. |
| |
Today’s emphasis is on rehabilitation. Many medical conditions that once meant a loss of independence are today only minor setbacks. Consequently, the number of short-term stay Residents is increasing, and their needs for rehabilitative care have moved beyond what can be met in the existing building. The New Beginning will include a separate short-term, Rehabilitation Unit. |
| |
Expectations have changed. Residents and families are demanding more than we are able to provide in our current setting, and rightly so. Residents want an environment more like they had when they lived independently. They expect more privacy. They want rooms with sunlight. With ample closets, drawers, countertops and storage, better lighting and modern phone service. The RBJH New Beginning will provide these amenities, and more. |
| |
Personal comfort is not a frill. Today, more seniors choose to stay in their own homes or in assisted living for as long as possible. When they eventually move to an extended care facility, many are in wheelchairs. Maneuvering a large, customized wheelchair in the current setting can be difficult. New design elements in the Blumkin Home will let Residents maneuver their wheelchairs without bumping into a roommate’s bed. |
| |
A secure setting is vital. A safe, nonrestrictive environment is vital to the well-being of Residents with memory disorders, including Alzheimer’s. A new Special Care unit -- carefully designed to meet physical, social and emotional needs -- will let us better incorporate this philosophy into the care we provide. |

We have a Great Deal to
be Proud of…But Times Have Changed.
The Omaha Jewish community’s strong commitment to its seniors is evident in every corner of the existing Rose Blumkin Jewish Home. And because the Home is part of a unique community, people who come here are already part of our “family” when they arrive.
However, today we serve a more diverse population whose needs the current building’s design cannot adequately meet. The New Beginning will provide services in four distinct care units: a Special Care Unit dedicated to the needs of people with memory loss; a new Rehabilitation Unit, with emphasis helping clients return home after hospitalization; two Skilled Nursing Units designed for Residents who need care for extended periods of time. |
Jay and Kim Noddle “What makes the Blumkin Home so special is that it’s
on the Federation campus. It’s community. It’s
family. Everybody knows one another here. There’s more
of a connection than just from Resident to Resident. It’s
from family to family.” |

"The focus of Jewish Senior Services is, and always has
been, quality of life. We are committed to meeting the needs
of mind and spirit, as well as the daily physical needs of
our seniors who require nursing care for extended periods
of time. In the existing facility, nursing, activities and
social work staff provide excellent care and the many "extras"
that make the Jewish Home so much more than just a nursing
home.
“But our definition of "care" has evolved
to include so much more than can reasonably be accommodated
within the existing structure. The new design features a combination
of increased space for shared, group activities, along with
greater emphasis on individual privacy. It truly will offer
the essence of home--comfortable and enriching for all who
live there." |

My mother was a visionary. She would say ‘you never
want to stand still.’ There are times to make changes.
If we can improve ourselves, we must go forward and look to
the future.” |

“What could be more important than working together
to provide a setting in which seniors who no longer can live
independently continue to experience the day-to-day simple
joys of life?
“Residents and their families have come to expect more
and more of the staff and facility. We meet and exceed their
expectations every day. But for this to continue to be true,
we need a building that more accurately reflects who we are--Omaha’s
best and only choice for Jewish seniors who want, need and
deserve an inviting and up-to-date haimish, warm atmosphere. |
